Shelf I bought at Swiss Days for all of Gracie's treasures.

The blessing dress she never wore.
I thought it would be fun to post a few things from Gracie's room. I had searched and searched for a shelf to put all of the wonderful things people had given our Gracie Girl. And I found it a few months ago at Swiss Days. I saw it and knew it would be PERFECT to showcase all of her fun things. There are only two things that are on that shelf that were purchased by me, everything else was a gift. My camera couldn't fit the fun frames and things that are on top of the shelf.
The booties were hand made from my 93year old Grandma McBride!! She made me some of these for Callie and I was looking forward to getting another pair of them for Gracie. And as tradition holds, she sent Gracie her 'silver cup' with her name and date of birth engraved on it. I love having these for all of my children, I think it is such a keepsake for them to have for years and years.
Gracie is doing pretty well. She is still slow with her motor skills though. She is grabbing her foot now which is new. She likes to stick her tongue out and attempt to blow bubbles and smile. We know she is in a good mood when she does this, it is pretty cute. I love that she is happy enough now to play and have some fun with us without crying. She is coughing, gagging and wretching a lot in the night now. She usually is on continuous feeds at night for 8 hours but lately I have been turning them off after 4 hours (then giving her a big dose when she wakes up) because she is not tolerating them. I don't know if she is getting more secretions in her throat and nose at night due to the colder weather and change of seasons or what. During the day, her vomiting has gotten a little better but she is still obviously refluxing. I see her start to cry, then she starts to gag, choke, turn blue and wretch. Throwing up follows depending on whether or not she has a full stomach. My poor little sweetheart. I know that it is just so painful for her. She is on all the reflux meds she can handle and she STILL refluxes. I hope that her second surgery helps her reflux in some way.
The big obstacle that we (and our in home therapy from Kids on the Move) have had with advancing Gracie's motor skills are her feeding issues. She is still feeding for a full hour through her NG tube, every other hour. So this means that we can't jostle her around when she is eating or directly afterwards which leaves us a small window of time to work with her. And half the time, those 'slivers' of time are either inconvenient or she is sleeping. So I think until we can get her feeds farther apart, we are going to be limited in helping her roll around, sit up, etc.
We have settled into a new kind of normal and it isn't so bad. We have our Gracie at home with us which is wonderful. She is now happy for most of the time which I don't think I have ever really had since she has been home. She likes to be held more and played with more. I always say that HLHS is a mean, mean trick. Here is this precious baby with only a scar and feeding tube to show that things inside of her are very, very wrong. Other than what I just mentioned, she feels like our normal, healthy baby. Which is what you start to believe and then you're brought back to reality when you go to a doctor's appointment or remember that you are only a few weeks away from another major heart surgery.
My kids are so attached to her now and are in love with her more than ever. I know that this next surgery is going to be a lot harder than the first one because we know her now. She is our little sweetheart more than ever before. We will just continue hoping that things will turn out for the best. Thanks again for every one's care and concern for our girl, we appreciate it!!
p.s. To all the heart moms out there who have had their babies on continuous feeds at night, I ask this question: Do you ever move them out of your room? Gracie is still in our room at night and I don't think she is sleeping as well in her port-a-crib as she does in the real crib in her room. Also, we are certainly not sleeping very well because she coughs all night long. However, I have just been too nervous to have her in the other room because I feel like she could choke and I wouldn't be there to help her! With a baby monitor, you just can't really tell sometimes how they are doing. Also, she goes to sleep around 8:00p.m. and inevitably my kids go in my room/bathroom and disturb her sleep. Just wondering your thoughts.

That shelf is awesome! I must have missed that booth at Swiss Days or it would be mine and not yours! I'd give it to Gracie if it was mine and she wanted it though. I've never even met Gracie and I'm attached to her. You can see the love in those beautiful eyes! We wish you the best. I don't know how you do it all!!!
Just my opinion, keep her in your room at night. Love her pretty room!
Owen is still on continuous feeds all night and he is still in our room. When he outgrew his portable crib I just moved his BIG one in our room, took the side off and pushed it up against our bed. He cries for his binki, or the pump goes off, or he gags.. I can just roll over, fix his problem and go back to sleep. He also doesn't tolerate the continuous at night very well, he does MUCH better in the day. We've been working on weaning that, but it's almost TOO much to get in the day bolus feeds.
LOVE THE BOOKSHELF!!

All the things in her room are so perfect. I agree with Jen, if I would have seen that shelf at Swiss Days, I would have fought you for it! ;) I am sorry to hear that she is still throwing up - that has to be awful for her. How sweet that her brothers and sisters are so attached to her. She is so blessed to have such an attentive family that truly adores her!
Andrew was on continuous NG feeds for a couple of months. Our biggest concern with him was that he would roll around and get the dang tubing wrapped around his neck! I would constantly go in his room and check on him. One morning it was wrapped around him so tight I couldn't believe that whole thing didn't have a "recall" notice. So we decideded to buy him some "footie" jammies and thread it down his back with tape and cut a hole in one of the feet for the tubing to come out. So this way when he would roll around it would wrap around his legs. :) My opinion on sharing a room is this, do what works. I love having my kids in the same room.

What a cute shelf filled with precious things! I am wondering if you ever get any sleep Michele! I bet if you do it is only light sleeping...always listening for Gracie! Has anyone told you lately that you are an amazing mom! See you Thursday!

I love her shelf and her room. Everything has meaning and that is so cute. Smart idea to hang her blessing dress. Wow and I complain if Aspen doesn't sleep through the night! You sure are a great and patient mom. Gracie is so cute and you can tell she has a special place in this world.
We kept Carla in our room I think until she was about 15 months old. She wasn't on continuous feeds, but I would pluck her out of bed and give her a bottle while she slept at both 1:00 and 4:00 until she was a year old (I was kind of obsessed with her being chubby enough). When she became to big for her basinet we brought the crib to our room. It stayed there until I was ready for her to go to her room. It’s funny because people tell you to get the baby out of your room or they will get used to sleeping in your room and have a terrible transition. Honestly, I think Carla slept better when we finally moved her to her own room BUT I had to feel comfortable with her all alone in her room before we could take that step. My advice to you is to just do whatever makes you feel most comfortable. Also, with the rolling over and motor skills and such - that will all come with time - our little sweethearts need a little extra time but they eventually catch up (so don’t stress too much).
I would like to ditto what the Wright family said. My heart baby was on tube feeds until she was six months old. It's hard! Hang in there. The continuous over-night feeds were miserable for my baby. Just a thought-would it be possible to do smaller bolus feedings through the night? I had a pump that would allow you to set the bolus to happen at intervals so I didn't need to hang it every three hours. Even if she got an hour off every three hours, it might help.
Do you use a wedge for Gracie? This might help with the reflux some. You could also just prop the head of the mattress up a bit with a towel under the mattress so she's sleeping on a little of an incline. You may have tried all of these. I would worry more about the coughing (a sign of reflux too), so definately, if you are not comfortable with putting Gracie in your room, keep her. It would be good to include your husband in that decision though.
:o)
One last idea-I had an aunt that put her baby in their walk-in closet in their room when they needed a little more "distance" between, but not a whole hallway away.

So Gator sleeps in in own room now, but my 4 year old still sleeps with us most nights...He slept in his swing in our room until his Glenn... It made me feel better to have him right there... If the crib is out of the question because of space, try the bouncy chair or the swing... Or if you decide to transition her to her room, try having a slumber party in her room and see how she does is her big girl crib...
Carlie was on night feeds until she was around nine months old. When she outgrew her bassinet, I moved her crib into our room and she slept there until she was 13 months old. It was hard to move her out of our room, but she was doing well and it was good for her, and my husband and me. I do pray that Gracie can move past the coughing, gagging and wretching...it will happen one day, hopefully very soon! Best wishes...

Great shelf with such beautiful mementos on it. I'm sorry Gracie's feedings still aren't going very well. You must be so exhausted!!! I hope the reflux improves soon!
Cute room for a cute girl.
Miss Gracie is just not ever going to let you off easy-- with anything!
Hopefully the good outweighs the bad, I am sure it does.
I don't know how you do it and I'm sure that years from now you won't know how you did it either, but just hang in there. You are so strong and so amazing. I'm so lucky to have a friend like you.
I am so sorry that Gracie is having such a time with with her feeds. We never had Charlotte on continuous feeds once we came home, but she would have some two-long feeds during the night. Her room is right across the hall, so we leave the door open, and we have one of those video monitors. We also have the top of her mattress on the middle setting, and the bottom on the lowest setting so it is at a nice incline. This has helped with her reflux (we put the boppy at her feet to keep her from sliding down).
This probably isn't any help at all!
I do love reading your blog. It's nice to know we're not alone with our hlhs babies.
What about those baby monitors with the TV screen that you can see the baby on? I don't have one, but I've always thought one would be great. Just a thought. You are an amazing lady. Thanks for your example.

We have Kylie in our room also. I just put her crib in with us. She gags way too much and coughs all night with the contiuous feeds. I worry to much about her choking during the night. She is also not doing very well with the NG tube, She has been very congested and coughs all day.
I would be too nervous to have her in her own room. We have a video monitor which has been so nice while she is feeding and sleeping you can keep such a close eye on her and still go about your day, so one of those might me helpful if you want her in her room.
One heart mom to another,

Michele,
Hi. I am a heart mom, too. My daughter has HLHS and is 3 months old. She was on continuous feeds through the night until just recently. We always had her in our room in the basinet. At first, when her reflux was really bad, we would prop her up on the boppy. However, she was a newborn and couldn't roll over then, so I don't know if that would work for Gracie or not. Depending on where Gracie's room is, and how light or heavy of a sleeper you are, you might want to try to put her in her crib with her mattress elevated. It might do her wonders to get a good nights sleep in her own bed without any interruptions. I would be scared, too, to not hear her gag or choke! These kiddos can't do enough to scare us, can they?! :)
I've enjoyed reading your blog, I just found it a couple of weeks ago. Please email me if you need a friend. bethanykeisler (at) hotmail (dot) com.
Gracie and you all will be in my prayers.
I do love that shelf!! What fun things. She continues to be in my prayers and will stay there.
She is so precious! You are doing such a great job Michelle! Keep it up, and we'll all be praying thru this next surgery too!
Thanks for all your updats!
