Ambulance Ride

Gracie strapped into her car seat and strapped to a gurney in the back the of ambulance.
Well, we had a very eventful night last night. Gracie had been coming down with a slight cold for the last couple of days. She was coughing and sneezing but not much more. I put her down to bed and then heard her choking on the baby monitor. I ran in to check on her and confirmed that she did throw up like she always does, but this time, she looked TERRIBLE. She was white with red eyes and dark purple lips and could not catch her breath. Her eyes were starting to roll to the back of her head. She was struggling with trying to clear her throat and nose from throwing up, but she just couldn't do it this time with the combination of her being sick. I panicked, picked her up and started patting her back really hard trying to get her to shake out of it. But she just wasn't. I yelled for my son to get the phone and call my husband (who was still at work), which turned to asking him to call 911, which turned into me yelling for the phone and calling 911 myself. I told the dispatcher that I had a baby with a heart defect who was struggling to breathe after throwing up. She stayed with me on the phone until the police officer arrived. During the next few minutes, Gracie started to come around. When the officer got there he noticed that she looked very blue. At this point the whole event had completely exhausted Gracie and she was just laying in my arms with her eyes shut. The officer said after these types of episodes that the kiddos completely conk out because of exhaustion. We waited maybe another 6 minutes for the Paramedics to show up and she gradually started to pink back up. The Paramedics arrived and got all of her vitals and everything and said that she would need to be checked out at Primary Childrens to make sure she did not aspirate into her lungs which would cause pneumonia. They said they could transport her there. So instead of driving myself (which they said they didn't want me to do because if Gracie started having another episode, they didn't want us driving off into a ditch because of my distraction!) Also, I didn't want to sit in the ER for 6 hours with all the other 'sickies' coughing on her until they got us a room.

So off we went in the ambulance to the hospital!! My nice neighbor Kendall took my kids to her house while I got to ride next to Gracie in the back of the ambulance. (At this point I was calling my husband OVER and OVER and could not get in contact with him!!!!) When we got to the hospital, they admitted us directly to a room. My husband finally got the message and met me at the hospital. We were there for about 2 1/2 hours while they checked everything out. It turned out that her x-rays, saturation levels, blood pressure etc. looked pretty good. They did a rapid test for RSV which came back negative and they let us go home. We got home around 1:00 in the morning. What a night!! Gracie seemed glad to be home and slept like a log. We are glad things turned out well and are thankful for all the people who helped in her care last night. We hope she gets better in time for her surgery! Thanks for all of your prayers for our Gracie Girl!

What a nightmare! I heard a little bit about this last night and had a hard time sleeping at all because I was so worried. I am so sorry this happened to you and Gracie while you were there without Tom. How scary it must have been. I'm sure Gracie will forget it all, but I doubt you ever will. By the way, sorry about stalking you today with my texts...I was just so worried! Hope you have a quiet and peaceful night!!!
Love, Nat

My mom told me about it last night. She was with your mom when she found out. We were all nervous. I'm happy to hear that it turned out o.k. That must have been so scary for you with your husband gone.

Oh. My. Gosh. That sounds so scary - and I am so happy that she is ok! You need to write a book someday on all the experiences you've had lately. I hope you know I am here for you! And we are so relieved that Gracie is ok! Way to be a super blogger and take a picture - she is going to love seeing that someday!

I am so glad she is ok! I'm tearing up, and that doesn't happen very often.
Your blog has really helped me as we've had a foster baby with a heart defect.
He had surgery to repair his heart's imperfections, but I still like to check out how the babies are doing who have similar struggles.

Oh Michele!
That picture looks like the nightmare I have about once a week. I am so sorry for the scare and so glad to hear she's alright. Yea for the Glenn! You won't believe how much better they breathe after that operation. I didn't even realize McKay was as sick as he was until his lips looked so pink after surgery we thought he had a sunburn! :) There are better days ahead. I promise.

Much love,
Mindi and McKay

Oh I am so glad she is OKAY! I think my greatest fear now after having a HLHS baby is having to do CPR on Kylie, I know we would all be able to if it came to it, but what a close call. I hate the "blue" throwing up stuffy nose days. We have allot of them lately. They said after Kylie's glenn she would be pinker. She is but when she gets MAD she turns PURPLE. Yikes. I love to keep up on your sweet Gracie Girl! I am praying for you guys and hope her glenn goes well. She is so strong. Is she the 1st HLHS baby that has waiting so long to have the glenn? Just wondering. I wish we could have waiting as long as Gracie. She is such a fighter and has been through so much.

Oh GG, you little stinker, don't go scaring everyone like that again!! I guess she just didn't want everyone to get too comfortable with her health, because that is how she rolls.

I am glad to hear that little Gracie is doing better. She is such a beautiful baby. I have been following your blog for the last couple of weeks. My son Trig was born in October with TGA. I found your blog from another heart babies blog. Little Gracie and your family are in my prayers.

How did I miss such an important update... I'm so sorry! Sounds like you had a wild "RIDE". I'm glad that it didn't turn out to be anything MAJOR.. but I can't imagine the panic. We're praying for you all as the Glenn approaches.

It's Gracie's turn for a quick surgery and recovery.

Oh my! I had no idea of the scary experience you had this week when I stopped by Sat. evening to drop off Gracie's "treat". I am so sorry she has not been feeling well. Those poor Lone Peak Paramedics and our heart babies adventures! We will pray she is well for surgery.

I found your blog through Pams. How scary, we just went through the same thing last week but we were at walmart and he started gagging and wretching and then just went grey and limp. It is so scary when heart kidos do that. Lacey and Jax

Darnit! That's a terrible feeling to see your baby struggling. I'm so relieved that the night turned out ok. What is it with husbands? The time when you really need them most, they decide to take a siesta! :) I'm glad Gracie is at least open to the idea of bottles, that's a great achievement! YEAH.
