I took Gracie in to see Dr. Su today. She got her usual x-rays, weight and saturation level check. She put on a little weight and weighed in at 14 pounds!! She was 12 lbs. 14 oz. last time, I think that's the most she's ever gained in one month. Maybe the increase in milk has done her good! I was a little surprised that she had gained weight because she is still throwing up 2-3 times a day. Her sats were 75% at room air. Not great but not terrible. She seems to be higher at home. She was 80% when she got her shot for RSV a week ago at the pediatrician's office.
Dr. Su said that we have pushed Gracie out as far as she can go. They are going to try and schedule her heart cath on a Tuesday and her surgery on a Thursday so that they can admit her one time and get the whole thing over with. They do this for people who come from out of town and we all thought this would be the way to go based on how long it took her to recover from her last heart cath. They have their big meeting every Wednesday morning with the surgeons and cardiologists. With a Tuesday/Thursday cath/surgery schedule, they will have a chance to talk about the results of her cath and decide how to proceed with surgery the next day. Dr. Su said we would hear back on a surgery date within a week. He thinks we will be looking at the beginning of February. Dr. Su does think she will need the Nissin and a G-tube. The plan for now is to have her heart surgery, go home, see how she is doing with her reflux and then come back for the G-tube a few months later. So for now, we will continue to try and keep Gracie healthy and enjoy being at home and not out traveling to Primary Childrens every day in the cold and snow!!
p.s. Gracie has started to take milk sometimes from a sippy cup!! I got a special kind of cup from Walmart (Nuby brand) that let's you push the bottom up and squirt the milk into their mouth if they don't know how to get it themselves. She now can bite down on it and milk comes out. It works that way because it is not one of those non spill kind of sippy cups. For all you heart moms: it comes in a set with a spoon attachment and bottle with a push up bottom also. It's about $5.50. (I got the tip from Owen's mom!) Anyway, this is MAJOR improvement. When I give her her medications, she opens her mouth and acts like she wants a drink (because we have used a syringe to give her water/milk before so she recognizes the syringes and shows us she is thirsty) So now I will immediately go get her new cup and give it to her, trying to break her of the habit of the syringes. So it goes like this: she drinks, cries REALLY loud, coughs, takes another drink, cries REALLY loud, chokes and sometimes throws up. You wouldn't think it, but it is SERIOUS progress for her to even act like she wants to drink, let alone, drink and actually swallow and come back for more!! I just wish she had the whole swallowing technique down a little better so she didn't cough, choke and throw it all back up! So we will keep plugging along, hoping some day in the far future, she won't have to deal with any kind of tube anymore!!

Yeah for progress! Even if it is baby steps. They are steps in the right direction! We will wait to hear of her surgery date so we can all up our prayers for her. She will be great!
I'm so happy the cup is working!! I need to find you a bear cup with the straw... they are AMAZING too!
Owen also did the drink, gag, puke dance for quite a while and actually took a couple months to overcome. I personally think it ocmes with age and skill. He's almost one and JUST getting the hang of NOT gagging. He still does it from time to time on solids. We aren't close to getting rid of the NG tube... but we are past the point of needing the Gtube or Nissen... which is an improvement in itself.
I'll pray for Gracie to have a smooth Glenn, feel good and start eating as she gets bigger.
Gracie at 14 pounds sounds really good. I am glad that she has the desire to drink and you have the patience to keep working on it. It will be nice for you to enjoy January at home with all your children.
That's so funny you wrote about this because I just picked up one of those Nuby Infant Feeding Sets today! I'm excited to try it since Maddie has yet to drink from any of the sippy cups we have. Glad she's putting on some weight too! I'll be thinking of you all as you get near the Glenn...praying for a much "smoother" recovery this time around!
Take care!
Love,
Katie
That's nice that she's all nice and chunky. We were at Primary's today too, @ 2:30, with Kody for his murmur (he's totally fine). Kody would have loved to see his girlfriend.
Thank you for the update! We pray for your family every night and will continue to do so. Thanks for sharing your baby with the world!
We will keep Gracie in our prayers. Glad you had a nice Christmas.
Michele,
Thanks for the detailed update. Your darling family is still close to my heart.
I'm glad that things are going well and Gracie is making progress!
What a great update! Gracie is so strong to keep up with all the demands and struggles...so are you guys! I think of her every single day and will continue to pray extra hard for her to have a successful cath and surgery and for a good recovery. Thank goodness for little steps of progress to keep you going. I'm here for you for whatever you need--always!
Yeah for Wal Mart and for other heart moms who have really good advice. I'm glad Gracie's numbers look good and that she is drinking from a cup. Maybe she can show off her new skill when I see her Thursday!

Michele,
Yeah! A plan. Even though it's scary, I think there's something comforting in having a date and a plan. Gracie seems to be thriving. A huge A+ to her tenacious momma. You are truly amazing. If you ask me Gracie has a penchant for timing--I think February is the perfect month for all things heart related.:) We'll be thinking of you and sending so much love your way.
Know you look at this with dread AND anticipation. Praying peace for you and strength for precious Gracie through another ordeal. She is our HERO!!
reading your guys' blog is so humbling for me. days are still so hard for me with my little Grace, even though she has a new heart. It seems that being a Mom is just NOT an easy thing. And having all her other problems on top of it is so overwhelming at times. I cry, and whine and complain, and constantly feel inadequate as a mom...and then I read your blog...and am greatly humbled. You have 3 other children along with a baby who still has such difficult hurdles to overcome. And yet, you are always positive and cheerful. Finding the good in everything.
Thank you for your amazing example, as a mother, and as a family. You are a beacon for so many of us to learn from.
Thank you!
We will be praying hard for Gracie as she goes into the next few months with so much ahead of her.
We love you all!
Love the Andersens
