Full Circle

Some of you may wonder why I blog so much during this ordeal. Quite frankly, I eat, breathe and sleep Gracie and this blog helps me feel connected to her when I am home at night or even when I am by her side in the hospital. This is my journal of every detail of her life to remember always. I was a journal writer when I was young and into my young adulthood. I think it helps me deal with challenging times in my life.

Dr. K was here this morning and decided to go in again and wash out Gracie's chest because of the bleeding. He also turned down the flow on the ECMO machine to see if her little heart would take over and do some of the work.

It didn't.

Her little heart is just not going to recover. We are out of second chances. They have done all they can do. Her body is wearing out.

If it were up to me, I would keep Gracie on ECMO for a month just to see her sweet face, touch her delicate hand or rub her cute little toes. But we have to let our sweet girl go, for her sake. Luckily, it is not a decision we had to make. She made it for us. She is not in pain but her body is suffering.

She is still having a tremendous amount of bleeding. Her body has had enough. Our hearts are aching.

We came home tonight and had a little family council. What a difficult thing to tell your children that this time, for sure, Gracie is not coming home. To see the tears on my children's cheeks is almost too much to bear. I knew a long time ago that if Gracie passed away that it would be difficult for Tom and I, but I DREADED dealing with three grieving children. Two mornings ago Max asked me first thing when he woke up, "Mom, how long does MOURNING last?" I told him that it can last a long, long, time. After our meeting tonight Max made Gracie a sign that said "We Love You Gracie" with a big red heart to take with us to the hospital tomorrow. I think she will like it.

So tomorrow is a very dreaded day. The day most parents hope they will never have. The one where they say goodbye to their little one for this lifetime. In the morning, we are going to take the kids up to say goodbye then they will be taken home while Tom and I stay up there for however long we feel we need to.

We have come full circle. The reason I say that is because one week ago we got the call that we thought would change our lives for the better, forever.

It wasn't to be.

Now, we have the chance to donate some of Gracie's organs. Wow, what an experience.
Because of this, we won't get to be with her after her passing like we would want to. Our donor family didn't get to do that either. I envisioned being able to hold her for as long as I wanted to after her passing but you can't do that when you are an organ donor. They will let us be there when she passes but will have to take her immediately to the operating room. I feel like it's the least we can do. We are so grateful for the family that gave our daughter a new chance at life. We hope that Gracie can do that for someone else too.

Thank you for the tremendous outpouring of love and support to our family. We feel the peace that your prayers are bringing into our lives.

WE LOVE YOU GRACIE GIRL!! You have changed our lives for the better and we will strive to live our lives in a way that we can see you again in heaven. You have been a pure blessing, an absolute treasured gift.

You don't know me but I have been following sweet Gracie for the past year and feel a great loss today. My thoughts and prayers are with you & your family.

It is tremendously reassuring to me to know that our Heavenly Father and our Savior are mindful of all that we must endure in this life and that they can lift our burdens and make them light. I am grateful for the knowledge that they know and love us individually and that through the Father’s great plan of happiness, your sweet family will be reunited with your Gracie Girl again.

There are tears all over my keyboard as I'm typing this. My daughter had her transplant at the same hospital as Mimi's Mia and so found you through her blog. I spent most of the first days after Zoe's transplant thinking of what her donor's family gave up to donate organs; the time they sacrificed and the solitude they may have wanted. I've often wondered if I would have been able to do that for another family. I'm in awe of you and I believe Jesus will bless you and your husband today as you make that sacrifice that has already been made for you. God bless you today. Gracie was such a gift to so many and now she will be a gift to many more.

I ahve been following your story for awhile now. Oh, my heart breaks for you. I wish you didn't have to go through this. It is truly so very hard. I wish i didn't know. We said goodbye to our daughters a little over a year ago. I lost it when you said taht you dreaded telling your kids. That was the hardest part for me was telling our daughter. You are such an example to me. I wish that someone would have said something about donating all of our daughters organs. I would have in a heart beat. I was too caught up in the moment to even think about it. You will be in our prayers constantly. I pray that you will be given the same miracle that we were given. The miracle of PEACE. May peace be with you.

I too, like you Mom, will miss being on the phone with you when you go in her room after a nap. Your voice would go so high as you would greet her... like you have never been so happy in your life to see someone. We are so sad today, and my kids are grieving right along with us. My very self you knew: My bones were not hidden from you, When I was being made in secret, fashioned as in the depths of the earth. If it's any consolation, remember you have three additional beautiful children at home with open arms waiting to see you. I imagine their lives this past year have been exceptionally challenging with all the time spent away from you or at the hospital with Gracie. While I'm truly saddened by the news of Gracie, there is a part of me that is elated at the thought of your other children having their mommy and daddy back full-time. They need you so much, especially now. The influence of your sweet Gracie will live on through all of us whose lives she touched. In the end, that is the true miracle. No doubt we will all talk of her, think of her, and cherish the impact she had on us all. For me, I hold my babies a little closer, I no longer sweat the small stuff like I used to, I live in the moment....all thanks to you and your family sharing your testimonies and your story. I don't pray, I KNOW, the Lord is watching over your family at this time. I pray that you and your husband will have the strength and influence of the spirit to guide your family through the grieving and mourning process. I have never experienced anything even remotely close to what you have, so I have such a great admiration for your strength and wisdom through all of this. I hope you will continue to update us all on how your family is doing as you have many people who will continue to "check-in" to see how you are doing. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you.

I am sobbing right now. How can her time on earth be done already? May the Spirit be with you during the coming days, weeks and months. She has blessed so many lives and strengthened so many testimonies. Reading about Gracie has made me more grateful for my own daughter, and makes the little daily challenges of raising a child seem so trivial. What a blessing it is to know of Heavenly Father's plan for us and that our time on earth is so brief compared to the time we will be together in eternity. God bless your family and that sweet baby girl.

I am so touched and amazed at how much faith, courage, strength, and dignity you have shown since the beginning. This morning, Tim called me from work in tears telling me of the decision to let Gracie go home to her Heavenly Father. I can't contain my tears as my heart breaks for your family. Regardless of never having met in person, I have always felt a connection with your family. We too have 4 children with our youngest having HLHS and I can't help but put myself in your shoes. I can't bear the thought of having my older children go through all that yours have. Along with Tim and myslef, my 11 and 7 year children also participated in the fast for Gracie yesterday. They said they would want people to do it for Ethan.

We have been cheering Gracie and your family on from the beginning. You have been in countless prayers and will continue to be. Much love is coming your way.

I too have never commented before, but we just want you to know that you have been in our thoughts and prayers for a year now. Our prayers now will consist of pleading to our Father in Heaven that you will have an outpouring of His love and comfort and angels to surround you and carry you through this trial in your life.

We pray that you will find comfort in the memories that you have and the Spirit that you felt the last few days as the veil has been so thin. From personal experience we know and have a testimony that Heavenly Father provides us with priceless experiences through the death of our children that carry us through our grieving process. Hang onto those feelings and thoughts that you have.

Although nothing we say can ease the pain, just please know that we are terribly sorry for your loss and our hearts ache for your family.

Hi there,

I am a new reader to your blog. Your story has touched me immensely. I can't even begin to imagine what you all must be going through. Gracie and your entire family will be in my prayers. One of my close friend's toddler daughter has been battling cancer since she was 3 months old. When she was about to be admitted into the isolation unit of the Children's Hospital for her risky stem cell transplant, a family friend posted a quote which I'd like to share with you ~ "What the caterpillar thinks is the end of the world, the butterfly knows is only the beginning". I firmly believe that God has bigger plans for your little girl and that her short (yet very full) life will not be in vain. She is already bringing together strangers in prayer! Thank you for sharing your sweet daughter with all of us!

God Bless,

I am so glad you have the same knowledge I do of where our little ones have gone to and what a blesing it was to have had them in our lives. And to know that they will be waiting for us to be with them. I am very, very sorry. I know 1st hand that words just don't cut it. I have been following daily and my heart is sadden that things didn't turn out the way we all prayed it would. Our Heavenly Father just had a better plan for her that just didn't include this life. Bless you and your darling family. Thank you for sharing some of your most treasured moments with your Gracie with all of us that looked forward to reading about her. She is a beautiful little girl. I guess you can think of it in this small way, she is perfect and just did not need to go through this life to get where we all want to end up and that is with Our Heavenly Father who loves us! Bless her that she might continue to bless your family and watch over all of you until you meet with her again. With all my heart felt love, Linda Hart (Allstate)

My heart is aching for your sweet little family whom I have never met & most likely never will. I have only been following your blog for a couple of weeks, but the spirit that comes from your posts is amazing. Heavenly Father is definetly right there, with his arms around each one of you. Gracie was very blessed to be a part of such a special family! Please know each of you are (& have been) in our prayers.

Our prayers are with you and your family. We lost our sweet Hadley back in December. Her brothers are 7 and 5. The heartache is nearly unbearable but, there will be a lot of love around you. It's a gift our children leave behind. They touch so many lives here on earth and then they leave all that love with us.

Blessings to you an yours in this most difficult time.

Just came across your blog and read with the emotion that only a parent who has journeyed for the past 5 months with my own son, Rudy, who hasn't made it out of the hospital yet from his Norwood. Wish I'd come across it sooner as I appreciate your sharing with such beauty and courage. HLHS is a frightening journey, but brings new clarity to that which is precious in our lives. Comfort, grace and peace to you.

My cousin has a son with HLHS and I have been privileged to come to "know" many heart families through her blog.

I sit here days away from bringing my 3rd child into the world, in tears, as you have to say good-bye to your 4th. Your blog is beautiful and your grace in this situation so beautiful to witness.

I pray for peace and comfort for you and your family. And I pray for joy and happiness for little Gracie as she awaits her reunion with you all.

I pray that Heavenly Father can give you comfort during this time of pain and loss. I know that His comfort can take something that you never thought you could endure to something with his help you can.

I am so sorry for you loss. My heart is aching for your loss. When I hear this church song I am grateful you have the gospel and that your children do to. I do not know where I would be at without the gospel. What a sweet little baby. You are truly blessed to have one of Gods choice children who only needed to be down her for a moment. She was that close to perfection. Thank-you for sharing your story and making life a reality.
