I didn't get to post until now because I was busy! I held Gracie for a total of about 4 hours today. It was really fun. When I got there this morning the nurse said that she had just gotten done holding Gracie. I was glad to hear that and told her I think she is the first nurse that's ever held her! Although, no one has really been able to hold her until this past week since she has been extubated. She told me that she had held her on her tummy and Gracie seemed to like it, so here I am trying it myself!! It was fun to have her face so close to mine. She was running a bit of a temperature, so in this picture they were trying to cool her off a bit and get her fever to come down. They sent cultures away and we will see by tomorrow if she has an infection. Her heart rate and respiratory rate were still high today. They are just going to keep watching her. They went up on her feedings so she is now getting about 16 ounces a day.
The nurse sat her up a few times in her little bed. I got to hold her up and while I was doing that I was talking to her and smiling at her. She gave me a little smile back!! I asked the nurse to remind me what age they are developmentally when they smile. She looked it up on her computer and it said after the age of one month. So there you have it--her first smile! Her face is so taped up it was really more like a half smile and happy eyes--but I'll take it!
So right now we are watching and waiting again. We cannot predict at this point what is going to happen or when we are going to go to the third floor.
Goodnight everybody!

Michele,
I'm so glad that you posted! I was worried! I'm glad that you didn't post, however, because you were holding your little miracle!
We are still praying especially hard tonight that she will be healthy and be able to go to the third floor soon.
Oh how jealous I am that you get to hold her! I just want to hug that little girl!
Have a good night!
HUGS
You look so happy! Hopefully no infection. Sweet dreams sweet Gracie!
Sweet little girl! So glad you got to hold her so much and were there to receive her first smile!
Cute, Cute, Cute Picture! I am sure she loved being held against you like that. Dad told me about the smile! I remember just begging Kinsey for a smile because I felt I had done "SOO much" for her, where was my reward??? You have done so much for Gracie, you have given her a chance at life, you have driven the long distance to the hospital EVERYDAY, you have comforted her during difficult procedures- even though they were heart wrenching for you to watch. You deserve many, many more smiles :)
Gracie is so sweet! A smile! I love smiles! Ryker gave two out (he was sleeping during both, probably dreaming of getting the tube out!) and I treasure those smiles because sadly enough I was the only one to see them. Hopefully they will get things figured out,and get you to the third floor! Have fun holding her!
hugs,

Busy day... holding little sis and a smile all in one day--how wonderful! I was hoping that was the reason you didn't post...so we were happy about the good news. Sure hope she doesn't have an infection and that they can figure out what's keeping her from the big move. Sweet dreams!
Oh my! Your first smile. Those are the best milestones! Smiles from children can make everything else in the world obsolete at that moment. That's really great!
I can just picture a smile on that beautiful little face--and the happy eyes, too. Pure Joy!! Love you, Susan
There is nothing like waiting for that first smile and finally seeing it! What a beautiful moment that must have been. I, too, was worried all day without a word from you, but hoping that you were having too much fun and praying that "no news is good news." Sorry to put on the pressure, but it's a little hard to deal with life out here in the world without news of "our Gracie." Thanks for keeping us updated and we hope that you stay busy doing all the fun mommy/baby things today! Good luck with the big move, we'll keep our fingers and toes crossed!
Smiles, everyone, smiles!! (Famous line from Fantasy Island). Very cool. I love baby smiles because they smile with their whole body. A great day for you and Gracie. We will keep praying, and especially about the temperature.

You don't know me, but I live in Blackfoot, Idaho and I found the link to your blog from another blog that I follow. I just wanted to tell you how truly inspired I am by Gracie's story....what a strong spirit. She truly is a miracle! She is just the most precious little girl and I often find myself crying as I read....not because I am sad, but because I am so happy that she is fighting! May the Lord continue to bless you through this difficult journey and I hope that you will always feel his comfort surrounding you and your family. Take care and God bless!
What a beautiful picture of you both! I miss you both and think of you often! Love ya! Lisa
Michele,
With all you and Gracie have gone through I bet this was such a special time for the two of you.

This is Spencer. It is so cute that she smiled at you. Lets hope that she makes it to the third floor. You look so happy to get to hold her and have her smile at you. With hugs, kisses, and love Spencer
