My Boys (Deacons)

To My Boys
I’ve had the joy and privilege of working with you in scouts and deacons for about seven years. Once someone comes into our troop or quorum, they become my own son. Once that happens, you are my son for life. I worry about you, pray for you, and have you on my mind like I do my own children. During this time with Gracie, I’ve had many of my sons write cards, emails, and even a blog comment. I love these and cherish them. More importantly, I know my sons are praying hard for my family, and it’s been a sustaining force.

I wanted to write this specifically to my boys and make sure they understand what’s happening, and what we’re praying for. As you already know, prayers are truly heard and answered. What becomes confusing is when what we pray for something and it doesn’t come to fruition. Does this mean when we fast and pray that our prayers aren’t heard or answered? My resounding answer to this is no. Take my little Gracie for example, she has had thousands of prayers on her behalf. Many of which asking that she would be healed and recover. Special fasts have been made also asking for this.
However, you need to know when I’ve prayed and fasted and talked with Heavenly Father, my prayers have always been that Gracie will know she is loved, watched over, and that if the time comes that she is called back home, that my family will be able to handle this and grow closer because of it, and that we will have the spirit, and that we’ll be comforted. Gracie will surely be in a happier place if she’s called back home, it’s those of us left behind that are sad. We want only to have Heavenly Fathers will to be done. Selfishly, as her Father, I want her to stay and be with our family. But most importantly, I want her to be safe and protected and to be held in loving arms, whether it’s my arms, or heavenly fathers.
These prayers have been heard and answered, sometimes we get to understand right away what the answer is, and why, other times we may have to wait for a long time to understand how those prayers were answered.
Please keep praying for baby Gracie and my family, those prayers are being heard and answered.
I love you, pray for you, and hope you’re making choices in your life that will bring you closer to Heavenly Father. I had a visitor come last night and tell me that he wishes he had been making choices in his life that would allow him to better feel the spirit that is here in Gracie’s room. My heart broke when hearing this. I would hope and pray none of you become so far removed from Heavenly Father that you will ever utter these words. He loves you, you are his chosen and special children sent to earth at this time for a special purpose. He’s mindful of you and is preparing you for great things in this life. The Atonement is real, and the Savior knows your potential as do I.
Love Brother Gledhill!

Tom, can you be more amazing?!! At a time like this, you are thinking of others and their well-being. There are people who come into our lives for a season and change it forever. You have definitly been one of those people for our family. The love shared between you and "your boys" was enabled by your calling in scouts, but has only continued because of the genuine love and respect that you obviously have for each one of them. I know for a fact that Jordan would not be the young man that he is without your influence during those tender deacon years. These boys must really be special to have been allowed to have you as a leader in their life! We miss you more than you know as our neighbor, but we count our blessings that you are still a part of our lives! Thank you for YOU! May the Lord continue to bless you for your goodness. We are all praying for your family harder than we have ever prayed for anything before.
With all the love in our hearts,
The Smith family

Beautiful, we are so very blessed to have the gospel in our lives and the rich knowledge of our Heavenly Fathers plan and eternal life that comes with it. The youth need to know that they are now planting those seeds that will leave them so much more prepared for the future, whatever it may hold for them.

The week before my son Ryker passed away, we had stake conference. At that conference, we were given an apostolic blessing that if we were doing everything we could to follow the commandments of Heavenly Father, we would be blessed with a miracle in our lives. Ryker was up at Primary's, and after being on the ventilator for the 6 weeks previous, they were having a difficult time weaning him off. He was doing well otherwise, and even the Monday after that Sunday, they had let me hold him, vent and all.(It was only the 3rd time I would hold him until he passed.) The miracle I had prayed for was that he wold be able to get off the ventilator and be able to come home. I guess I should have specified as to what home, because that next Saturday was Ryker's angel day. They had gotten him off the vent, he was doing well and so we went down to get something to eat. We were gone 20 minutes, and when we came back up, his sats were 50, and they were about to re-intubate him. They did so, but something was not right. It seemed like our world came crashing down, and we had no control over what was happening. After satting at 19 for over 40 minutes, they told us our options, and my husband did what we knew would be best for Ryker. We decided to name him and my husband, along with Ryker's Grandpas and one uncle, released his spirit to truly go home. They put him in our arms and we said goodbye for this time. It is so hard as a parent to want your baby to stay so badly. I do not know of Gracie will make it. But I do know that through the grace of God, you all will be able to find the peace to get through whatever will happen. You guys are amazing, and there are so many who do not even know you personally that are praying for you guys.
All our hugs, tears, and prayers,
Emily and Mike Gourley

Tom,
I loved reading this message of yours for many, many reasons. I'm so glad you have had a chance to feel so much love for these boys that you have had the honor of working with. Now maybe you can know of the love I have for YOU--my favorite 16 year year old Sunday School son. Those years I hold in my heart as such a special time. You will always feel like my son and I love you. Our family holds you in our hearts and our prayers. Love, Susan
